An international conference on the Applications of EPCIS in food supply chain management was organized by SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture in Oslo on 16th November, 2011. The aim of this conference was to discuss the use of EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) for food traceability. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Norwegian eSporing project and was partly funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
The conference was attended by 31 participants, including solution providers, researchers and non-profit as well as government organizations (GS1, IFT and MCMC) from 8 different countries.
The presentations included an overview of the EPCIS standard by GS1 and Norwegian food traceability projects - eTrace and eSporing projects. Two presentations on international EPCIS based traceability activities were made, including experiences from Edible Birds Nest traceability in Malaysia and traceability pilots and interoperability study in the US. Finally, three presentations on mobile applications for traceability were made – with projects from Sweden, Malaysia and Norway.
